Shailain Shah, a Hertsmere borough councillor “admired for his kindness, humility and steady leadership”, has died.
Cllr Shah, who died on Wednesday (April 22), was a Liberal Democrat representative who served as borough councillor for Bushey Park from 2023.
His group leader, Cllr Chris Shenton, said Cllr Shah was “one of the genuinely nicest people I know”.
“He always looked for the good in people and was scrupulously fair at all times. I will miss having a coffee with him and listening to his wise counsel,” he said.
Cllr Shah spent 30 years running Bushey-based financial services companies and, during his time on the council, he served as chair of the Audit Committee and chair of the Hertsmere Shareholder and Investment Committee.
The Labour leader of Hertsmere Borough Council, Cllr Jeremy Newmark, said Cllr Shah “will be remembered as a dedicated public servant whose commitment to his community left as a lasting mark”.
Cllr Newmark said: “Known for his integrity, warmth and tireless work on behalf of residents, he approached public life with a strong sense of duty and compassion.
“Throughout his time in office, he championed local initiatives, supported community cohesion, and worked collaboratively across political lines to deliver meaningful outcomes.
“Shailain once told me that being elected as a councillor was the ‘realisation of a lifelong ambition’.
“Beyond his civic role, he was valued as a colleague and friend, admired for his kindness, humility and steady leadership.
“His passing is a profound loss to all who had the privilege of knowing and working with him, and his legacy of service will continue to inspire.”
Cllr Lynette Sullivan, leader of the Conservative group, said it was a “privilege” to have worked alongside Cllr Shah and described him as “a modest and humble man whose presence in the council chamber was always felt in the most constructive way”.
The leader of the Reform UK group, Cllr Lynette Sullivan, said Cllr Shah had “served his community with dedication and carried out his public duties with quiet dignity and sincerity”.

“He was a lovely man, a true gentleman, and someone who always treated others with kindness, warmth and respect.
“He will be greatly missed by all of us, and our thoughts are with his family and loved ones at this very sad time,” she said.
The leader of the Hertsmere First group, Cllr Marc Amron, said he was “deeply shocked and saddened at the loss of my friend Shailain”.
Cllr Amron said: “When he spoke in the council chamber, people listened. Shailain was respected by all in the chamber regardless of political allegiances.
“He will be greatly missed by all those who knew him as one of life’s truly good people.”
