The guide says: "The River Cam’s most famous stretch is in Cambridge, where punters glide beneath college spires. The story begins, however, in the village of Ashwell, Hertfordshire, whose chalk springs are a source of the river and whose streets offer a scenic interlude northbound off the A1.

"Visit the towering, 14th-century Church of St Mary the Virgin, or pop into one of its many pubs – a reminder of a time when Ashwell was a brewing hub fed on spring water."
It recommends The Three Tuns - which has a Tripadvisor rating of 4.2 - for its "menu of fresh, seasonal British dishes" and is also full of praise for The Rose & Crown, which it describes as "a classic 16th‑century village pub serving hearty, home‑cooked food and real ales".
Introducing the guide, the magazine's writers said: "If you have had enough of London's packed tube carriages and the endless urban sprawl, fear not.
"Some of England's prettiest villages - a world of cottage gardens, hedgerows and tumbledown pubs – lie just beyond the threshold of the M25. Many are found within an hour's drive for capital dwellers, traffic unfortunately permitting, and others are just a little further."
