A museum is inviting people to help bring its heritage to life by supporting a major redevelopment project.

As part of the Museum of Watford’s transformation through the Re-imagine Watford Museum project, a new Learning & Engagement Volunteer role is now open. The project is backed by a £2.4 million grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund.

Volunteers will support the museum’s Learning & Engagement team by helping to deliver interactive programmes that connect the public with Watford’s history.

Peter Taylor, mayor of Watford, said: "This is an exciting time to get involved with the Museum of Watford as we reimagine how we share the town’s story with our communities.

"Our volunteers play a vital role in bringing history to life, and we’re looking for enthusiastic people who are passionate about making a difference. Whether you’re interested in culture, community engagement, or simply trying something new, we’d love to hear from you."

Activities will take place both within the museum and across the town through the Museum on Tour programme. This includes community events, festivals, school sessions and family activities.

The role is open to anyone aged 18 and over and offers hands-on experience in heritage, community engagement and event delivery.

No formal qualifications are required, and full training will be provided.

Applicants are asked to commit to a minimum of a few hours twice a month over an initial three-month period.

Volunteers will help deliver community events, welcome and interact with visitors of all ages, assist with event setup and administration, gather feedback, and prepare activity materials. They’ll also have the chance to explore the stories behind museum objects and collections.

In return, volunteers will join a supportive team, gain new skills and experience, and access unique heritage collections. Travel expenses will be covered for off-site activities.

The Museum of Watford is committed to accessibility and inclusion and encourages applications from people of all backgrounds.

Adjustments and support are available to ensure everyone can take part. For more information or details on how to apply, visit www.museumofwatford.co.uk/opportunities.
