An historic steam train wowed crowds as it made its way through Hertfordshire at the weekend.

The Duke of Gloucester pulled the Steam Dreams service from Haywards Heath to Cambridge on Saturday (June 13).

Departing at 8.30am, it passed through Potters Bar, Hatfield, Welwyn Garden City, Stevenage, Hitchin, Letchworth, Baldock and Royston on its journey to Cambridgeshire.

The Duke of Gloucester was built in 1954, but design and construction errors meant it failed to achieve its expected performance and it was withdrawn after only eight years in service.

It lay in a scrapyard for more than a decade until the Duke of Gloucester Steam Locomotive Trust rescued it in 1974.

A 13-year restoration project followed and it returned to rails again. It would be withdrawn again in 2012 to undergo an extensive overhaul and would not be back pulling services again until 2024.
