A Watford primary school’s head is preparing to say goodbye to pupils after six years at the helm.

Cheska Tyler will depart Cherry Tree Primary School when the summer term comes to an end today (July 23).

She will be taking up a new post at an English language school in Qatar.

In a social media post, the outgoing head said: “Sharing the news with our school community that I will be leaving Watford this summer was one of the hardest things I’ve had to do. Change is never easy, especially when you are leaving a place that feels like home. However, as educators, we constantly encourage our children to live out our school values, and I knew I had to practice what I preach.

“To ‘aim high’ and ‘be brave’ means stepping out of our comfort zones to embrace new horizons. This August, I will be taking on a exciting new challenge as head of primary at a British international school in Doha, Qatar.”

A school spokesperson has confirmed to the Watford Observer that Gillian Jackson will take over as head, combining the role with her existing job as head of Beechfield School.

The two schools – along with Laurance Haines Primary School - are part of the Inclusive Multi Academy Trust.

Watford’s mayor Peter Taylor has wished Miss Tyler well, saying: “I’ve visited the school many times and I’m always struck by the positive and caring community they have created. Under Miss Tyler’s leadership, everyone at the school is working together to make sure that each pupil achieves their full potential and has high aspirations. I am sure that will continue in the years ahead.

“In Watford we are fortunate to have many fantastic schools. I am very grateful to teachers, school staff and governors for everything they do for local pupils and families. I hope that they get a well-earned rest during the summer break.”
