The driver of a car which carried Anthony Joshua and killed two of his friends was reportedly attempting to overtake another car when it crashed, a court in Nigeria has heard.
Joshua was in the car with his two close friends, coach Sina Ghami and personal trainer Latif Ayodele, when it crashed along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State, Nigeria, on December 29, 2025.
Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, 46, denies charges including death by dangerous driving and driving without a valid national driver’s licence.
The court was told that the Watford-born former two-time unified world heavyweight champion was asleep along with his two friends, when Kayode lost control of his Lexus SUV while trying to overtake a moving truck.
The car then crashed with a parked lorry.
Mr Ghami, a sports rehabilitator who runs Evolve Gym based in Colindale and South Ruislip, and Mr Ayodele, who worked closely with Joshua, died at the scene.
Abubakar Adamu, 35, the driver of the stationary lorry, denies a charge against him of obstructing the free flow of traffic.
Inspector Christopher Ajayi Taiwo of the Ogun State Motor Traffic Division told the court that both damaged vehicles had been removed by the time he arrived at the scene.
The court heard that police have not taken a statement from Joshua at this time, which Mr Ajayi says is because he “didn’t have his number”.
The trial has been adjourned until September 10.
Hours before the incident, Joshua had shared a video of him playing table tennis with Mr Ayodele on his Instagram story.
Mr Ghami had also shared an image of him in Lagos, Nigeria.
