Tudor councillor Hugh O'Hanlon has resigned from his seat on Watford Borough Council.
The 56-year-old stepped down last night following his two recent arrests for drink driving.
Mr O'Hanlon appeared in court last Tuesday afternoon to answer charges of driving while intoxicated, driving while disqualified and driving without insurance, where he pleaded guilty.
It is the second time in recent weeks he has admitted a charge of drinking driving.
Mr O'Hanlon was thrown out of his Liberal Democrat party following his initial arrest, in June.
He did vow to carry on as an independent but came under increasing pressure to step down following his second arrest, on July 28.
He is due back in court at the end of the month and could, a magistrate has warned, face a custodial sentence.
A spokesman at Watford Borough Council this morning confirmed he had handed in his resignation and said a by-election for his seat must now be held in the next six months.
