Rifles, shotguns and ammunition were stolen from a house in Watford during an early morning burglary.

Police were called to the property in Horseshoe Lane yesterday (Thursday), shortly after 4am.

Detectives are now appealing for the return of the stolen weapons.

Those caught in possession of firearms without a licence can expect to receive a five year prison sentence.

Detective Chief Inspector Paul Maghie said: "I would like to appeak to the conscience of those responsible for taking these items or to anyone who may be in possession of them to contact Crimestoppers immediately on 0800 555111.

"An event like this is extremely rare. Those who took them may have initially panicked and are now wondering what to do with them. I would like to remind these people that the penalty for possession of such firearms without a licence is likely to end in a five year prison sentence and I would urge those responsible or those who know where they are to contact Crimestoppers as a matter of urgency and let them know where the guns can be safely recovered.

"The recovery of these firearms is the primary concern of the police at this time."
