A FASHION conscious thief swapped his dirty trainers for a new pair before walking out of a shop.

Robert Wilson, 19, of Cheshire Drive, Leavesden, went into Allsports in The Harlequin shopping centre, on Thursday, May 1, with two friends and stole the £80 Adidas trainers, Watford magistrates heard.

Police arrested Wilson and the manager noted the trainers he was wearing were the ones missing from the shop.

At Watford police station Wilson admitted putting the trainers on and to stealing them.

Wilson has previous convictions and is already under a community rehabilitation order until October.

He owes £800 in outstanding fines. He told the court he had £400 saved, but could not pay that in because he had promised it to his mother, who suffers from multiple sclerosis, for a holiday.

He was told by chairman of the bench Mr William Dallas, the outstanding £800 must be resolved with the bailiffs or he could be sent to prison.

Wilson was fined a further £200 for theft of the trainers and ordered to pay it in 28 days.
