WATFORD COUNCIL has unveiled its master plan in the fight to retain emergency services at Watford General Hospital.

Today (Friday), Watford Mayor Dorothy Thornhill will present health chiefs with a "new and radical" proposal to transfer sections of the hospital to Cardiff Road and rebuild parts of the Vicarage Road site.

The plan, known as Option Two Plus, would move non-clinical departments to the Cardiff Road development creating a "health campus", allowing the Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire strategic health authority (SHA) to expand the hospital.

According to council officials, the health campus has growing credibility among SHA representatives. There is even the possibility of building a teaching centre at Watford General and officers believe there is potential for a burns unit and cancer centre as well.

Mayor Thornhill said: “This is a truly amazing opportunity for Watford.

"The creation of a health campus, giving the hospital full teaching capacity, the chance to reconfigure the site fully and to completely transform West Watford – these are once in a generation decisions."
