A NAVY recruit from the military base in Northwood has appeared at St Albans Crown Court charged with rape.

Lennie Augustus James, 21, who works at the NATO base in Sandy Lane, is alleged to have carried out the rape on Thursday, August 26.

At the preliminary hearing on Tuesday. Judge Cripps said evidence must be served by Monday, December 15, for a plea and directions hearing in the new year.

James, who was recruited by the Navy from his home in St Vincent eight months ago, had his conditional bail extended, thereby enabling him to visit his family over Christmas.

Other conditions prevent him contacting, directly or indirectly, anyone from the Joint Service Unit at Northwood.

He has been told he must not enter Hertfordshire unless it is for court appearances or to see his solicitor by previously arranged appointment.

He was also told he must attend court for a trial at a date to be set.

The plea and directions hearing was set for Wednesday, January 7, 2004.
