A school chapel reopened today following a £200,000 refurbishment.

The Chapel of St Dominic, at St Michael's Catholic High School, closed in March and the work was completed on September 2, in time for the new school year.

In a ceremony held at the school, in High Elms Lane, Garston, the chapel was officially opened by Sr Ann Cunningham OP, the Mother Prioress of The Dominican Sisters of St Catherine of Siena.

The Dominicans, whose motto is "Veritas", meaning truth, is often known as The Order of Preachers.

St Michael's was founded in 1955 and the school saw it fitting that Sr Ann unveiled the plaque opening the chapel today on St Michael's Feast Day.

The new chapel was designed by Stuart McGuckin, director of MCR Studio Limited, Chartered Architects, and the construction work was done by RPL Construction of Luton. Stuart said: "It's nice to see the final outcome of your work and what it means to a community of faith."

In an address to staff and pupils, Sr Ann emphasised the school's roots in the Dominican tradition and praised it for its “outstanding” academic record over the past few years.

She added: "St Michael's would make St Dominic very proud and I am sure he and many Dominicans who worked in the school and have now passed away, will be looking down on us today with great joy."
