Residents of Hertfordshire are being asked to take a trip down memory lane as part of a project aimed at creating an archive for the community.

Hertfordshire Archives and Local Studies launched the Making Memories project earlier this year with a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund and since then volunteers have created Herts Memories - a fully interactive website where anybody can add their pictures and memories of living and working in the county.

“We know how much local people value where they live and relish the opportunity to share their own experiences and memories – all of which can be incredibly valuable as a resource for local historians and researchers,” said Keith Emsall, executive member for community safety and culture.

“Increasingly, we are making use of information technology to make local history accessible to everyone and this exciting new project is giving everyone the chance to record their own memories for posterity.”

Visitors to the website can add their own memories, images and video clips on any topic or event, whether it was last week or many years ago. They can also add comments about a memory contributed by somebody else.

As part of the Making Memories project, a 2010 calendar has been produced featuring a bygone Hertfordshire, with locations including Oxhey, Hunsdon, Hemel Hempstead, Ware, Westmill and St Albans.

Other images include the finalists of Miss Hemel Hempstead 1948 and a dog in a gas mask from Watford in World War Two.

The calendar costs £3.50 and to order a copy visit Hertfordshire Archives at County Hall.

Hertfordshire Archives is also looking for editors to help it continue developing the website. No computer expertise is necessary and training will be provided.
