Victims of rape and sexual assault can access an alternative range of support and medical services without the need to involve police.

Watford's Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC) was opened on Monday and offers safety and for victims and provide choices about care.

Stuart Nagler, chair of the Police Authority, said: “I am delighted that another such commendable project has been completed that will help victims of rape and sexual assault.”

Medicals can be undertaken by a doctor and the results stored until the victim feels they are ready to proceed.

If police assistance is sought, support of dedicated officers based within the forces Sexual Offences Investigation Team can be provided.

Detective Superintendent Jon Chapman, is the Constabulary’s lead officer for Protecting Vulnerable People.

He said: “These types of offences are extremely personal and have significant impact on victims.

"Together with our partners we want to establish services that respect the needs of often vulnerable victims in such a time of crisis.”
