Generous children from Francis Combe Academy have held a spooky sleepover in order to raise money for disadvantaged children in Africa.

Kenya charity was set up by a parent from Bedmond school, Esther Muoso, after she saw first-hand the struggle children face for basic provisions such as food and clothes.

Francis Combe Academy adopted the charity after vice principal, Mr Steve McShannon, noticed an article in the Watford Observer about a village of children in Kenya who had been given school uniforms from a local primary school.

He said: “Luckily the article gave the name of the lady who made it all possible and with further meetings between Esther and the Academy it was soon realized that Francis Combe Students could offer more than just uniforms to the Kyambai schools in Kenya.”

Year 7 students and teachers from Francis Combe Academy decided to hold a 12-hour-overnight spooky sleepover at the end of their first half term and enjoyed a range of games and team building activities.

Supported by a team of staff from the Academy, students gathered sponsorship to complete the sleepover and have raised around a £1000, as part of their first fundraiser.

Germaine Matthews, North Watford extended schools coordinator, said: “There were two students who celebrated their birthdays at the event and what a birthday sleepover they had.

“So much fun was had by all and what a way to raise money for our chosen charity.”
