A football club which provides voluntary football coaching to youths in the area has been targeted again by thieves.

Evergreen Football Club, on South Way, Abbots Langley, was broken into via the roof on Wednesday morning, between 12.30pm and 10.30am.

Burglars made off with cases of Bulmers, Budweiser and Lucozade and bottles of Corona and Vodka, as well as £100.

Ron Smith, club chairman said: “The thieves tried to get in through the window and so ripped down the wire mesh and smashed the glass.

“As they couldn’t get through they climbed up on the cellar roof, worked out where the joists were in the wood and started taking it apart.

“When the thieves got inside the club they smashed up the till, which is going to cost to replace as well.

“We have just held a successful club fundraiser over Halloween, in order to raise money to keep the club going, as it’s all voluntary.

“But with the amount of damage that has been caused by the thieves, the money we’ve raised is going to have to be spent on repairs.”

The football club has been subject to a number of burglaries, with the last taking place merely six weeks ago.

Although the club has installed burglar alarm systems and taken numerous security precautions, this has not deterred thieves.

Mr Smith described the efforts of the local police as fantastic, as they went around the neighbourhood door-to-door on the morning of the incident.

He said: “The reaction of the local police was really great.

“I just only hope that whoever is responsible for this break-in is caught - they've caused at least a £1000 worth of damage.

“We provide a voluntary service in the area and it’s just terrible the club is being targeted in this way.”
