Children will receive £200 for their school when they cut the ribbon at the grand opening of a new store in Carpenders Park.

Pupils from St Meryl School, in The Mead, will complete the short walk to The Parade, where they will be presented with the donation on Thursday.

They will then officially open the new Co-operative shop, which has replaced the Somerfield supermarket.

Store manager Jamie Hewitt said: “The Co-operative is very much a community retailer so it is appropriate that our local school is involved in our special event. We are delighted pupils are playing a central role in the relaunch of our store.

The Co-operative spent £400,000 to convert the shop, creating four and securing 19 jobs. The conversion follows the Co-Operative Group's £1.56billion takeover of the Somerfield chain.

The grand opening will take place at 10am on Thursday.
