I was in Tesco earlier on today when they announced there would be a 2 minutes silence to remember the servicemen who had died in wars.

I think they should have also mentioned the silence as being a period when civilians in this country and elsewhere who died in conflict should also be remembered.

Watford Area Humanists participated in the wreath laying ceremony on Sunday and it was very much in the spirit of remembering all those who have died in conflicts around the world that we participated.

Until the military involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan, annual remembrance services were beginning to fade into historical oblivion, which arguably was no bad thing.

Let us hope that the present military involvement in Afghanistan will end with a minimum of casualties and injuries for our service men and women, and that once they come home, we never have to see our young men and women having to risk their lives and limbs again.
