Students from a school in Kings Langley were given a blast from the past as they were plummeted back in time to 1940s war torn Britain.

Kings Langley School students have spent this week immersed in food, fashion, entertainment and education from the era, in order to raise money for their Rock Challenge entry - a national dance and drama competition - and as a fitting tribute to war veterans.

Clothed in a 1940s-style dress, Charlotte Baker, 17, of Langley Lodge Lane, Kings Langley, said: “It’s been an absolutely fantastic week.

“The highlight for me has to be when veterans and people who were affected by the war came to the school from Sadler’s Walk to tell us of their experiences.

“It is so important for our generation to remember what the older generations went through for us.

“We will be among the last to hear their stories and it will be down to us to pass them on to younger generations.”

Organised by Kings Langley sixth form Rock Challenge Committee and Performing Arts Department, teachers planned an array of activities for students to take part in, including code-breaking, 1940s cookery and fashion lessons and sweetheart-letter writing - creating a telegram box especially.

Friday will see the climax of the week, with a themed 1940s VE celebration day, with students, teachers and support staff invited to dress up in costume of the era for £1.

Prizes for the “best dressed individuals” in each year group and for the overall “best dressed form” in the school will be given out.

Kings Langley School headteacher Gary Lewis said: ”Students and staff have worked hard together to create this week, which has been incredibly all-inclusive, with all years coming together.

“Lessons haven’t suffered as a result either, as we have managed to incorporate the 1940s into the curriculum, with some students studying the diary of Anne Frank in English lessons, while others looked at old war memorabilia and the war efforts of servicemen and women in history.

“Although students have had fun, the 1940s-themed week serves as a fitting tribute following Remembrance Day and a timely reminder as to what the soldiers fighting in Afghanistan have given up for us.”
