Fewer than a quarter of Hertsmere adults and above take part in regular sport or active recreation.

A study discovered that only 20 percent of people aged 16 and above participate in 30 minutes of activity, three times per week.

Helen Bottomley, community sports officer at Hertsmere Borough Council, said: "Our aim is to try to encourage residents to get active.

“We are all guilty of making New Year’s resolutions to our diet and exercise, and quitting after one lapse. So make a step towards a healthier lifestyle now."

In response Hertsmere Leisure, a charity which promotes exercise in the borough, is offering residents aged over 45 special discounts at selected health clubs in Bushey, Potters Bar and Borehamwood.

Jude Lewis, from Hertsmere Leisure, said: “It’s important that we make every effort to keep ourselves active for both our physical and mental long term well being,"
