The Abbots Langley police office is on the hunt for volunteers to help man the front desk.

The community office in the High Street is hoping to recruit friendly faces to welcome members of the public visiting the station.

The office, which opened in the summer of 2006, is used as a base by the community team and police community support officers.

As officers spend much of their day out and about in the community, patrolling the streets, the force relies on volunteers to operate the information desk.

Neil Canning, Abbots Langley police sergeant, said: “We value the work the volunteers do and without them there would not be a front desk service for the public.

“With their help our door can be open to the public most of the time.

“Even if they only get two or three visitors a day, at least people have someone they can see instead of the station being shut and then having to be directed elsewhere.

“Our volunteers are not a substitute for officers or staff, but help enhance our service to the community.

“If we struggle to get volunteers, the station will not close - it will just mean we’ll have to reduce the hours the desk is manned.”

Volunteers can dedicate as much or as little time as they wish and although their main responsibilities will be to monitor the enquiry desk, some administrative or involvement in support activities may be required.

Currently, volunteers are needed daily from 10am to 1pm and applicants must be over the age of 18.
