Harry Potter, Angelina Ballerina and Fantastic Mr Fox took a turn on the catwalk today as pupils at a Watford primary school celebrated the final day of their Book Week.

Pupils at Holy Rood Primary School, in Greenbank Road, dressed as their favourite literary characters before the winners were chosen during a costume parade in the school hall.

Earlier this week, each class focused on the work on a chosen children's author and were visited by author and poet Andrea Shavick yesterday (Thursday).

Emma Braund, literacy coordinator, Key Stage 1 coordinator and Year 2 teacher, said: “Our focus has been on pictures and words. We wanted children to regain that love of picture books.

“Children are more encouraged to read books that have lots and lots of words but I think the illustrations, if you can understand what an author is telling you through pictures, that's a deeper level thinking that needs to be explored.

“Weeks like this encourage the children to read more than usual but in our school, reading has a huge focus anyway. A week like this just brings that to the fore even more. We couldn't do it without the support of staff and parents at home.”
