A sold out crowd rocked to the sound of Freddie Mercury and Queen as stars from the Francis Combe Academy produced their own version of We Will Rock You.

The audience clapped and sang along each night as the cast completed a three night run of the hit West End musical, based on more than 30 years of music from Queen's back catalogue.

Adapted for schools by Queen Theatrical Productions, the story is set in the year 2034 when talent shows such as Pop Idol kill the art of music, with new pop stars created so quickly they are famous for less time than it takes to play their records.

A band of rebels, led by dreamer Galileo and his love interest Scaramouche, then decide to overturn the Killer Queen and break free from musical monotony.

Directed by Lorraine Wright, head of performance at the academy in Horseshoe Lane, the whole school production starred Year 8 pupil Cameron Inglis in the lead role, Charlotte Garner (Year 10) as Scaramouche, Ashley Harvey (Year 10) as Britney and Charly Summers (Year 11) as Meat.

Chloe Ware (Year 10) set her sights on world domination as the evil Killer Queen, while Year 8 students Danny Bail and Danielle Carey featured as Khashoggi and Pop.

Alongside the main cast, many more actors and dancers took part as members of the ensemble, during the shows that ran from Thursday, February 25, to Saturday, February 27.

Meanwhile, former Francis Combe School student Andrew Grange, who recently graduated from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and is currently working at Sadlers Wells Theatre, returned to design the lights and rigging for the academy's production.

Lorraine said: “For many of the cast this was their first performance and was definitely the longest show we have produced and I am very proud of the whole cast.

“It was a real pleasure watching their individual journeys and I am very much looking forward to working with them on future productions.”
