THE Herfordshire County Cup First Round saw Garston Boys Under-17's having to travel to Royston to play an Under-18's Royston Celtic side.

After fairly even exchanges for the first 20 minutes, Garston's passing game began to take effect. Battling against a strong wind and uphill, the away side were unlucky not to take the lead in the first half when Dan Ainsworth sent a long shot crashing off the underside of the bar. Garston failed to finish off other good moves.

But the second half, down hill with the wind, saw Garston start to dominate, continuing their excellent passing football. Dan Ainsworth opened the scoring with a run and shot from outside the area after ten minutes and the home side started to buckle as slick moves and shots rained in on the Royston goal.

Ross Lafayette ran through minutes later, to see his final shot turned in by a Royston defender to make it 0-2. Matt Hansen then beat the offside trap with a great finish for his first Garston goal and 0-3. The scoring was rapped up when Darren Light provided a pinpoint cross for Dan Ainsworth to head in a fourth.

Garston could well have run in more goals as players tried to add to the score, but were well satisfied with such a convincing win against a strong side of a higher age group.
