Congratulations to Barnet FC and Barnet Council for reaching a sensible compromise over the club's stadium woes.

The new plan gives the club a much-needed lifeline by giving them the 6,000-capacity required to win promotion to the Football League.

In the meantime, the council has promised to help search for a new home for the club in the borough. If this has not been achieved in the next three years, the Bees will seek approval to demolish Underhill and build a new stadium on that site but not the 'second stadium' that some residents have objected to.

The proposals are a reasonable stop gap and councillors Victor Lyon, Katia David and Kanti Patel deserve praise for working with the club to achieve a compromise.

Once again we repeat our view that it is incumbent upon Barnet Council to secure a home where the Bees can thrive in Barnet. Whether that will be done by demolishing and rebuilding Underhill remains to be seen.
