A PART-time school teacher who became a deacon seven years ago was ordained priest on Sunday.
Rev Peter Stearn of All Saints church, Church Lane, Kings Langley, and more than 100 parishioners made the trip to St Albans Abbey to celebrate Rev Catherine Thorp's achievement.
Rev Stearn's assistant for four years and teacher at Bushey Meads school, Bushey, has taken an unusual route to qualification.
Usually following a year as a deacon there is a further ordination to become a priest, which means a greater part can be taken in the church's activities including holding communion services.
Rev Thorpe, however put off taking the further step until she felt ready.
Rev Stearn, who celebrated 20 years as a priest recently, praised his fellow priest's decision.
He said: "It normally takes a year but she has had the guts to say "no I am not ready" and buck the trend a bit.
"She is her own person and that is what makes her so special. She is a great support and friend, and is great to work with.
"She has made a huge impact since being with us. Here in Kings Langley we're all thrilled that she has made this step."
