HARPENDEN'S Ed Corrie came agonisingly close to causing a massive upset at the Boy's Under-15 National Championships at Bournemouth on Saturday, August 17, after losing out in three sets at the semi-final stage.

Corrie, who was seeded 15 in the tournament, received a bye in the first round before edging Bobby Brooke 7-6, 6-4 to book his place in the quarter-final.

There, Corrie took on second seed Andrew Milne and won in straight sets 7-5, 7-5 and looked set for a place in the final after taking the opening set 6-2 of his semi against Scott Dickinson.

However, it all started to go wrong for the talented 14-year-old and he lost the next two sets 7-5, 6-1 to exit the competition.

Meanwhile St Albans' Guy Thomas suffered a shock defeat in the Boy's Under-18 championships at the Nottingham ITC this week. Thomas comfortably defeated Matthew Sanger on Sunday 6-1, 6-4 before losing to the unseeded Jamie Baker 4-6, 6-2, 4-6 on Monday.
