BUSINESSES in Hertfordshire are being urged by the county council to take part in European week for safety and health in the autumn.

The council won a national award for its efforts during last year's European Week and hopes this success will inspire other Hertfordshire companies to take part in one of the UK's biggest workplace health and safety initiatives.

Around 50 businesses are expected to attend a promotional day to raise awareness of the event on Friday, August 30 at County Hall, Hertford, from 9am to 1pm.

Head of safety, emergency and risk management unit at Hertfordshire County Council David Moses said: "We were delighted to win the national award which recognised the county council's ongoing commitment to the health and safety of its workforce.

We are only too pleased to encourage others to join the thousands who are expected to take part in this year's week."

Last year the council organised a conference for senior managers, themed 'Success is no Accident' and arranged five roadshow events around the country, each covering a variety of work safety tips.

Companies from East England who are interested in attending the day can contact Barry Langham at the council, on 01992 556677.

This year's week begins on Monday, October 14 and focuses on tackling work related stress.

The HSE is urging businesses to run a stress-related campaign during the week and all those who take part will receive a certificate and be considered for an award,
