STEPS to reduce Bricket Wood's air pollution, which exceeds Government guidelines, will begin in September.
A number of sites in and around the village have been designated Air Quality Management Areas (AQMAs) so an action plan can be devised to meet reduction targets.
A high level of nitrogen dioxide has been detected in the air above Bricket Wood, close to the A405 and sections of the M25 and M1.
At low levels, the chemical can cause breathing difficulties and throat and eye irritation, while at high levels, it can cause bronchitis.
The AQMA order comes into effect next on Monday, September 2.
The news follows a emergency meeting in June for concerned residents to gain more information and consult Government agencies.
An action plan, which will include a timetable of measures to decrease pollution, should be in place within the next 18 months.
