FIREFIGHTERS nationwide will wear a commemorative ribbon on Sunday, September 8, in memory of their colleagues who have died on duty.

Including all those who died on September 11 last year, 2,202 British Firefighters have died while carrying out their duties since 1723.

On the annual British Firefighters Memorial Day in September the Fire Services National Benevolent Fund, Firefighters' Memorial Charitable Trust and Chief and Assistant Chief Fire Association will host the inaugural International Firefighters' Day of Remembrance.

The fire service and members of the public will be able to remember those who have died, while wearing a remembrance ribbon.

Donations of £1 per ribbon will be made to the FSNBF and FMCT and they will be available from fire stations, local fund raising events and from the FSNBC.

Ms Barbara D'avino, the FSNBF's National Fund Raiser for the south, said: "This day will enable all firefighters, their families and the public to remember those whom we have lost, give credit to those who serve and our thanks to those who are now retired from the Service throughout the world."

Many firefighters will observe a one minute silence at 3.30pm on the day of remembrance.
