HERTFORDSHIRE firefighters are stepping out in style after being issued with the new and improved fire kit.

The Fire and Rescue Service recently issued new tunics and trousers to its firefighters but their new look and increased safety protection was completed on Friday, August 16.

The new fire boots weigh half the amount of the current boots and are much stronger at resisting cuts, also offering protection from contact heat up to 500 degrees Celsius.

Alongside new gloves and smoke hoods, the new helmet tops off the kit.

It offers better protection to the neck, eyes and face and meets British, European and American safety standards,

Assistant Chief Fire Officer Frank Jones said: "We're very lucky in Hertfordshire not only to have first class vehicles but now first class fire kit.

"The new uniform meets the very latest performance and safety standards."

County Councillor Gerald Game, who is responsibkle for Fire and Rescue, said: "Our firefighters need to feel confident that their uniform offers them the best protection.

"They can rest assured that this new kit will protect them even further at the wide range of incidents they attend."
