A BLOCK of flats is to be built on a strip of derelict land in north Watford to meet desperate housing needs.

Plans for a two storey building of eight flats and two bungalows in Diamond Road were granted planning permission by Watford Council on Tuesday, June 19.

However, approval was not unanimous at the development control committee meeting.

Councillor Christopher Leslie, who lives in the area, said: "I feel there will be antagonism between residents and the people in the new development."

Councillor Fiona Brown said: "I believe this development will just increase traffic in the area and have a detrimental effect.

"I cannot see anything that will make life better for the residents.

"I would not be in favour of any further development in what is a densely populated area."

But officers said the applicant, Cairnpark Properties Ltd, had allowed sufficient parking for the new tenants.

The shortage of accommodation in the town should be a priority when considering plans, according to Councillor Geoff O'Connell.

He added: "A big problem in the town in the past has been housing. We always have parking and traffic problems."

Garages, bicycle stands and a bin store will be provided on the site.
