A SECONDARY school in Garston, has unveiled £2 million building plans to redevelop key areas of its site, set to include a modern new-look facia, as part of its own forthcoming Golden Jubilee celebrations.

In addition to a new entrance, the redevelopment at St Michael's School due for completion in 2003, is set to include up-to-date PE facilities, incorporating a purpose built gym, dance studio and six new classrooms.

The proposed development is a direct response to the school's growing popularity and intake numbers since it was first founded by Dominican nuns in 1955.

Headmaster of the school in High Elms Lane, Garston, Mr John Murphy, said: "When our school was built for the Catholic community of Watford almost 50 years ago and it was being run by Mother Ursula and Sister Anthony, there was only room for 780 pupils.

"We are heavily overpopulated and now have over 950 students, plus a high level of interest from other parents who may wish to send their child to St.Michael's."

It is hoped that all areas of the building project will be of immense advantage to students across all year groups, particularly the new dance studio, an area of the arts curriculum senior staff are keen to expand on.

Mr Murphy: "We are famous at St.Michael's for the high standard of talent our students have shown in our gym and dance shows and our productions The Sound of Music, Oh What a Lovely War, and the most recent, The Wizard of Oz."

The new studio is designed to give all students the opportunity to rehearse and perfect their performance, while also encouraging new students to become more involved and participate in forthcoming productions.

The headteacher added: "With six more classrooms, we will have more flexibility when teaching the children.

"The new front enables us to project our image as a school. It's new and professional, and emphasises the quality of education we aim to offer the children here at St.Michael's."

The school is committed to raising 10 per cent of the building costs, which they plan to do through a series of fund-raising activities and events.

Building work will officially start in January 2003. To make a donation to the development, contact the school office on 01923 673760.
