Hundreds of villagers enjoyed the Shenley Fete and Carnival on Sunday.

Around 600 people attended this year's event, held at Harris Lane Playing Fields. There was a procession, and a variety of fun events were lined up for the afternoon.

This year's procession was the best ever, with five floats taking part alongside a marching band of majorettes, and children from the village. Shenley Women's Institute's float was judged the best in the parade.

The ever-popular fun dog show was a hit, and children enjoyed taking part in races or watching the Punch and Judy show. There was also a tug-of-war competition, featuring teams from pubs and schools across the village.

Paul Racibowski, from the committee which organises the event every year, said he had been encouraged to see so many people come along, despite the World Cup being on television.

"It was a good old fashioned village fete, and there was a very good atmosphere all day."

Mayor of Hertsmere Stuart Nagler opened the event, and said afterwards: "I thought it was very good. It brings the community together, and I understand it has been going for about 30 years.

"It is one of the nicest parts of the Mayoral year."
