TWO new green appointments are due to be made by St Albans District Council in order to give environmental-based services an extra boost.

The go-ahead for the recruitment of a waste management officer and an energy officer which will cost the council £54,000, was given at a cabinet meeting of the council last week.

The appointment of a waste management officer should see an improvement in tackling issues such as abandoned vehicles and fly-tipping and should speed up the council's response to such complaints.

The energy officer is being appointed to help promote and encourage energy savings in people's homes and give guidance about how energy savings can be made.

Councillor Robert Donald, portfolio holder for health and the environment, said: "Our pilot initiative last October with the successful amnesty for abandoned vehicles proved that there was a need for more staffing resources to deal with this problem and with other anti-social behaviour such as fly-tipping and litter in our streets.

"The appointments will enable us to respond more rapidly to the public's complaints.

"They will also improve the quality of our environment."

Councillor Roma Mills portfolio holder for housing said: "I am really pleased that the cabinet has decided to fund an additional post focusing on energy efficiency in the home."
