The sky above a Friern Barnet school was awash with balloons last Friday as Holly Park Primary School celebrated the unveiling of its £1.35million redevelopment programme.

The Bellevue Road school, which was under construction for two-and-a-half years, now has a new 52 place nursery, a landscaped playground, reception classrooms, a specialist art and design room and a new all weather sports area.

Headteacher Michael Quigley, said: "It is enormously important to have these new excellent facilities for children of all ages.

"The reason we built the classrooms was to replace demountable huts but also to give us the opportunity to expand the school.

"The expansion was to cater for extra demand and means we will be a fully two form school."

Pupils from the school marked the official opening of the facilities by releasing a balloon each and also burying a time capsule in the school grounds.

The school obtained the funding through Section 106 funds, the New Deal for schools and Holly Park's own funds.

Councillor Alison Moore, cabinet member for education, who was at the opening, said: "I was delighted to open this exciting project expanding a popular local school. It's an excellent example of partnership between the school and the council.

"The innovative design provides not only extra school and nursery places but also first class facilities for all pupils."
