Suffolk made the long journey to Royston on Sunday, only to see their Herts County Cup ambitions end with the heartbreak of a penalty shoot-out.
The quality of the kicks was exceptional and, as it see-sawed from one side to the other, goalkeeper Kevan Marshall kept his team in the game with three great saves. However, it was Royston who emerged as winners.
Chris Drury had earlier powered through and thought he had scored, only to be told that his goal had been disallowed for off-side.
With time running out, Russel Alam hit a brilliant dipping volley which scraped the crossbar, and Dyer outpaced the defence, but his shot was blocked.
In extra time Kirk Stout saw his shot stopped on the line, but the stalemate could not be broken and the game went into a penalty shoot-out.
