Capped nine times for England, he was paraded at a special press conference at the Sports Cafe in London in the new Canterbury kit.

The 24-year-old joins the club from Harlequins in a virtual swap for Brendon Daniel, who has himself signed a deal with Quins.

Luger, who is bound for Australia with the England squad, has signed a two-year deal, hoping to take Sarries to domestic and European Cup success after joining the club at the end of the World Cup.

A former Richmond and Orrell player, he leapt onto the international stage with tries in each of his opening two internationals against the Netherlands and Italy. He was also part of the England side to defeat South Africa in December.

He said: "Everything at Saracens seems to be working on and off the pitch. I now have a chance to improve my rugby with Francois Pienaar. They play a great style of rugby which is one of the things which attracted me to them.

"I felt it was time for me to move and Sarries provided the perfect opportunity looking at the structure and the quality of the players. I was confident on keeping my place in the Quins side, now I have to impress here. In my mind I wanted to move to Saracens before they even approached me.

"It is a great challenge and I am hoping to fit in well."

Concerning his swap with Brendon Daniel, he said: "He is a great player and I would have liked to have played with him but will instead have to look forward to playing against him."

Francois Pienaar said: "I wanted a classy winger. He has everything you could want in a classy winger: speed, vision and good handling skills. He has come on in leaps and bounds and finished one of the best wingers in the Five Nations tournament this season. We believe he can bring us a lot of experience and strength."

Further announcements are expected from Saracens, although Luger's teammate, Jamie Williams, will not be heading for the north London club next season. The management were almost certain they had made the deal but Williams pulled out at the last minute and resigned for Quins.

The versatile young New Zealander was deemed by the club as the perfect replacement for Gavin Johnson, who retired from the game after Saracens' end of the season victory over Newcastle.

Team administration manager Mike Scott said: "Unfortunately the deal fell through. We have a good full back in Rob Thirlby at the moment but need to reassess where places need to be filled."

Other positions needing filling are at second row following Paddy Johns' departure for Ulster. The club are expected to announce the arrival of Bedford's Scottish international, Scott Murray.

Saracens had been linked with England winger David Rees but Scott refuted the claims. Their attentions are firmly focused on fly half and may sign another star from this season's Five Nations, Thomas Castaignede.

Castaignede, currently the French number 10, would be the perfect replacement for Alain Penaud and is considered by some to be the best fly half in the world at the moment.

Also at the London press conference, Saracens announced the resigning of Irish forward Paul Wallace on a three-year deal. Despite advances from the Irish RFU, Cardiff and Harlequins and some doubt over the tight-head's future in north London, he opted to stay at Saracens where he has already been an integral part of their line-up for three years.

Director of rugby Mark Evans said: "Just as important as making new signings is keeping your established players. We are delighted to secure Paul's services for another three years. Clearly he is one of the best tight head props in world rugby and therefore the type of player that we wish to have at Saracens."

Five of Saracens' squad are bound for England's tour of Australia. The five, Kyran Bracken, Tony Diprose, Danny Grewcock, Richard Hill and Dan Luger, left this week.

The brief tour involves a warm up fixture against club side Queensland and a test against an Australian side missing captain, John Eales, and fly-half, Steve Larkham, who had been linked in the national press with a move to Saracens earlier in the season.

If included in England's World Cup squad the five will be unavailable for club selection until November 7.

Bristol provided the perfect warm up for Saracens as they clinched the Lords Wood sevens tournament with a resounding victory in the final against Wasps.

Victory over a South African invitational side in the semi-finals and their 35-7 win in the final leaves them confident for this weekend's Middlesex Sevens.

The sevens squad for the tournament is: Kevin Sorrell, Matt Cairns, Ben Johnstone, Matt Powell, Ryan Constable, Alain Penaud, Brendon Daniel, Steve Ravenscroft, Matt Singer and John Rudd.

Ryan Constable, who captains the side, had been put in charge of the team selection for the tournament.

He said: "There are some really strong players within the squad despite losing players to international duty. We are entering the competition to win. It is a game which relies on the free spirit which leaves it open for anything to happen.

"There is an Argentinian invitational side which are a slightly unknown quantity but are bound to be good. But as far as the club sides go there is no form guide to go on."

The tournament at Twickenham takes place on bank holiday Monday.

The remainder of the Saracens' squad have been given until July 5 when they return to their training ground in Southgate to prepare for next season.
