RECORD breaking numbers of volunteers signed up in the past year to help people in Three Rivers.

A report presented at the Centre for Voluntary Service in Three Rivers' AGM on Wednesday said that more than 500 new people registered at the centre to help community groups in the district last year.

The figure, which covered the Year of the Volunteer 2005, broke previous records and is double the 2004 figure.

The report was presented by Harry Belsey, Incoming Chairman for the Centre for Voluntary Service, who also celebrated the unprecedented number of young people who are helping in the Three Rivers community.

Last year, the number of 15 to 18-year-old volunteers recruited reached 63, an increase of 29 on the previous year.

During the same period, 113 people aged 19 to 25 volunteered compared to 62 in the year before.

Speaking before the AGM at Watersmeet in Rickmansworth on Wednesday morning, Mr Belsey said: "The past year has been one of significant highs. Numerous voluntary sector groups have received valuable training and advice over the last year and volunteering in the district is flourishing, in particular, volunteering by young adults and teens has seen exponential growth.

"The passion and commitment of our volunteers of all ages has been met by our committed CVS and volunteer centre staff throughout the last 12 months."

He added: "Like many charities, we can expect tough financial challenges over the coming year but I believe we have the skills and commitment to succeed."

Mr Belsey also thanked outgoing chairman, Pam Handley, who resigned after seven years to concentrate on other work commitments in local health and community activities.

He said: "Pam has led the CVS with professionalism and a comprehensive knowledge of the local voluntary sector. We will miss her and wish her well in her new ventures."
