SEVEN medals awarded to a Bushey-born, Watford-educated Spitfire pilot who helped mastermind a famous escape from a German prisoner-of-war camp which later inspired the film The Great Escape sold last week for £3,220.
A mystery bidder purchased the medals when they were auctioned at Spink in London on Thursday.
The medals, including an OBE, AFC (Air Force Cross) and Air Force Efficiency medal and bar, belonged to Wing Commander Christopher McCarthy-Jones, who was born in Bushey in 1916 and attended Watford Grammar School for Boys between 1925 and 1930.
