Former England and Tottenham Hotspur player Ralph Coates died this morning.

The Bricket Wood resident, 64, passed away in hospital following a short illness.

During his celebrated football career, the midfielder played 248 appearances for Spurs, scoring 24 goals.

He was a member of the team that won the 1972 UEFA Cup, and scored the winner in the 1973 League Cup final.

Mr Coates had lived in Bricket Wood for about 16 years and was a popular member of the Bricket Wood Social Club.

Two weeks ago he had enjoyed an Abba tribute night with friends and was in “high spirits”.

One club member who knew him, Les, said: “Ralph was the most honest, sincere, genuine person you're ever likely to meet. You could not pay him a bigger tribute than that.

“He was just such a genuine guy. He had time for everybody.

“He loved his football and often spoke about it, and would always speak to anyone who approached him. He would never turn anyone away. He was an absolute gentleman.

“The whole club is stunned by it all. He was a member and a friend. This has come as a shock to most of us.”

A Tottenham Hotspur representative said: "An extremely likeable man who always had time for a chat with supporters, Ralph was popular part of our behind-the-scenes matchday team in recent seasons. He will be sadly missed by all.

"We extend our sincere condolences to the family of Ralph Coates at this very sad time."
