A Watford footballer is crawling the streets of London at a snail’s pace, to help raise cash for children’s charity Action for Kids.

Watford resident Lloyd Scott, 49, is still trying to complete the London Marathon - 24 days after it started.

Dressed as Magic Roundabout character Brian the Snail, he is averaging about one mile per day.

He has been hospitalised once enroute, after suffering heavy nose bleeds, and said the attempt has strained his knees.

Inside his nine feet costume, he lies on his stomach on a sled, dragging his shell along, for up to eight hours a day.

Hoping to cross the finishing line on Friday, the former Blackpool and Leyton Orient footballer told a national newspaper: “It has been really tough physically, as we are not designed to haul ourselves along by our arms.

“It is definitely the hardest challenge of them all.

“Due to the strain, I have been sick inside the costume and I keep having nose bleeds.

“I can only see the course from six inches from the ground, so I’m passing over dog poo, take away food, cigarette butts and glass.

“I am not complaining for one moment though as raising money for these kids could transform their lives. The amount of support we have received has been incredible.”

This is not the first extreme charity endeavour Mr Scott has taken part in.

In the past he has run marathons in a 130lb diving suit, a suit of armour and pulled a 23 stone mock boulder while dressed as movie character Indiana Jones.

And thanks to his efforts, he has helped raise more than £5 million for a number of charities.

This includes Action for Kids, which helps support children and young people with physical and learning disabilities, along with their families.

Mr Scott first started fundraising after beating Chronic Myeloid Leukemia 23 years ago.

After finding a bone marrow donor through the Anthony Nolan Trust, Mr Scott decided he wanted to do something to show his gratitude, and so ran his first marathon just three weeks prior to the transplant.

From there, he began to take on more ambitious projects, and to date he has had 20 operations including two hip replacements, due to the stress put on his body.
