Police officers from Hertfordshire are set to be drafted in to help with the Olympics after a private contractor failed to deliver enough security staff.

Frontline officers from nine forces including Hertforshire, Surrey, Thames Valley, Dorset and Greater Manchester Police are being drawn on to sure up security at the games, which start in under a fortnight.

The move comes after 3,500 soldiers have already been mobilised for the Olympics after the government’s security contractor for the games, G4S, failed to deliver enough staff.

Hertfordshire Constabulary is yet to go into details about how many of its officer are being seconded to the games and what they will be doing.

The force said it would be issuing a statement on the matter later today.

Elsewhere in the country Greater Manchester Police had to reassign officers over the weekend to guard a hotel where athletes were staying after due to a lack of private guards turning up.

The head of G4S, Nick Buckles, is due to answer MPs questions about the debacle at the Home Affairs Committee today.
