Firefighters were called to a garden bonfire in Garston after smoke started billowing onto the M1.
Crews from Garston Fire Station attended the address in Bucknalls Lane at around midday today.
Firefighter Stuart Grant-Salmon said the occupants were not pleased about the fire crew's arrival but the fire was extinguished after they were informed the smoke was going onto the motorway.
He said: “They were burning a lot of green waste such as branches and bits of bush. The fire was not that big but there was a lot of smoke.”
Fire crews used a hose reel to extinguish the flames.
Firefighter Grant-Salmon added: “If you are having a bonfire be aware of the wind direction and what you are burning.”
