Residents in Watford are being invited to explore the picturesque surroundings of Cheslyn Gardens at a forthcoming open day.

The site in Nascot Wood Road will be open and its garden managers on hand to answer questions from the public from 10am on Friday August 17.

The land was originally owned by the Earl of Essex, Lord Capel, who sold it off in 1888.

An architect, Henry Colbeck, then bought the land piece by piece between 1942 and 1958 with his wife Daisy.

Mr Colbeck the designed Cheslyn House and Mrs Colbeck created the two-and-a-half acre garden over twenty years.

The gardens have a formal, open area to the front, which is wheelchair accessible, and a woodland area.

The garden is usually open free of charge all year round, except for Christmas Day and Boxing Day.
