A Northwood school celebrated its 90th anniversary in style with a 1922-themed day.

Pupils came to St Martin's school on Friday (September 28) dressed in grey shorts and long socks while staff wore appropriate dress from the time and taught 1920s style lessons.

Classrooms were furnished with old desks, ink wells and nibs while lessons included dancing the Charleston in French, reciting facts by rote, learning tongue twisters, making cardboard rocking horses, darning and using an abacus or pre-decimalised sterling in maths.

There were also nature walks in the grounds with leaf rubbing in science and burning biscuits using a Bunsen burner to determine the energy content.

In English the boys had an Agatha Christie day where they acted as sleuths and interviewed a group of teacher suspects to solve the crime.

The boys heard about the history of the school in assembly and the pupils sang the new school song, followed by the cutting of the birthday cake. Lunch was a traditional dinner with Bugsy Malone music playing in the Speakeasy.

The day clearly went down well with the pupils with Year 7 student Saj Mehta branding it " the best history lesson that I have ever had".

Jamie Slagel in Year 8 added: "Sometimes I forgot that we are now in the 21st Century, it was so realistic."

Celebrations continued into Saturday with 250 former pupils and staff returning to the school to be taken on tours of the site be Year 7 and Year 8 pupils.

Daniel Bronson, who studied at the school between 1986 and 1991, said: "It was a good day to step back down memory lane.

"The school seems a lot bigger because of all the new buildings, and a lot smaller because I am a lot bigger."

Headteacher David Tidmarsh, who is in his 10th year at the school, described the festivities as "fabulous".

He said: "The boys got so much out of it.

"They had the experience of being in wooden desks and we did some writing with quills and staff weren’t using any of the electronic interactive white boards during lessons.

"We have been planning for the last year for the celebration and these two days in particular."

Events over the weekend were organised by the 90th Anniversary Committee, made up of staff and parents at the school.
