A resounding 7-1 victory over Hertford Town consolidated second place in the Spartan Premier Division for Oxhey Jets.

From the moment Danny Tilbury opened the scoring in the sixth minute on Saturday, Jets never looked likely to drop points. They dominated the game and created countless opportunities throughout.

Their second goal came from a likely source as Lewis Putman fired home a free-kick after the Hertford goalkeeper was penalised for handling outside of the area – the stopper received only a yellow card.

The prolific striker then added Jets’ third and fourth goals in quick succession before Mason Todd netted for Town to give them faint hope of a comeback.

Hertford contested well for the majority of the second period but couldn’t break down the hosts’ defence.

Jets eased off in the second period but remained in control of the game.

However, they added three more goals in the final ten minutes. Putman took his personal tally this season to 47 as he smashed home to make the score 5-1.

They grabbed a sixth in the 89th minute when Andy Lomas’ cross into the box found Ian Bywater and he rose highest to head home.

There was still time for another goal from Putman as he collected a pass, rounded the goalkeeper and slotted home to net his fifth of the match.
