Ken Furphy was born in Stockon-on-Tees, County Durham.
Recruited as a player-manager to replace Bill McGarry in 1964, Furphy presided over Watford's first promotion to the second division in 1969 and the club's first FA Cup semi-final a year later.
Having been hamstrung by a lack of funds he left for Blackburn Rovers in 1971 and later managed Pele at New York Cosmos.
