Northern Ireland recorded a memorable victory in the World Cup finals in Spain, beating the host nation 1-0 in Valencia in front of a crowd of almost 50,000.
The crucial goal was scored by Watford striker Gerry Armstrong, who was to be awarded a golden boot as the best British player at the tournament. Future Watford skipper John McClelland was also in the Northern Ireland side.
On the same day, the fixture list was announced for Watford's first season in the top flight, with an opening day visit from Everton confirmed.
