Langleybury edged to a one-wicket win over Reed in the regional final of the Davidstow Village Cup on Sunday to reach the national stages of the competition.

On a bowler friendly pitch, Langleybury won the toss and asked their opponents to bat first.

It took until the 11th over for Bury to make the initial breakthrough when skipper Richard Oxley took the opening wicket.

Oxley took two more wickets to leave Reed on 68 for three in the 19th over.

James Heslam was proving a nuisance and continued to accumulate runs while his partners came and went.

With the score on 144 for five in the 33rd over, Reed had a platform to build a good score, but Steve Carter came on to take two wickets and Luke Samarasinghe accounted for Heslam.

The last five wickets went down for 12 runs in the 38th over as Reed were dismissed for 156.

Oxley was the pick of the bowlers, taking four for 29, while Carter ended up with three for 23.

The run chase started badly with a wicket going down in the third over with the score on eight. Will Oxley (27) and Nahim Amin (40) then took the score to 73 before the latter was out.

Wickets started to fall far too quickly and Langleybury were staring defeat in the face on 137 for nine. But Stuart Knox (23) and Lee Stafford (8) came to the rescue with the final 20 runs to win by one wicket with just two balls to spare.

Langleybury will now travel to Dinton, the winners of the Buckinghamshire Group, on June 28 in the national rounds.
